O processo para a reabilitação do capitão Barros Basto, que recentemente chegou oficialmente à Assembleia da República, encontra-se cada vez mais próximo de fazer justiça à memória de uma das maiores figuras (senão mesmo a maior) do judaísmo português do século XX.

Negrão declara urgência no caso de judeu
Fernando Negrão, presidente da Comissão parlamentar de Assuntos Constitucionais, Direitos, Liberdades e Garantias, declarou urgente o caso da reabilitação do militar judeu Barros Basto, que foi alvo de segregação político-religiosa no ano de 1937. A petição, feita pela neta e patrocinada pelo advogado Rui Silva Leal, lembra que o oficial tinha sido «sancionado por ser judeu e praticante da religião judaica». Disse o Exército que Barros Basto não possuía «capacidade moral».

MP declares urgency in the case of Jewish Army Captain
Fernando Negrão, president of the Parliamentary Committee for Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees, claimed urgency in the case for the rehabilitation of the Jewish military officer Barros Basto, who was the target of political and religious segregation in 1937. The petition, made by the grand-daughter of Barros Basto and sponsored by the lawer Rui Silva Leal, notes that the officer had been “punished for being Jewish and by the fact that he practiced the Jewish religion.” In 1937 the Portuguese Army argued that Barros Basto did not have “moral capacity” to fulfill his military duties.
